Chapter 8 describes diamonds as assets, in Botswana and Namibia; whether rich mineral resources are a blessing or curse appears to rest largely on the political leadership culture.. There is no reason why one should expect a book that sets out to do what this one does to be totally scintillating throughout; nevertheless, sometimes the teller of an immense story does display that kind of magic, and I don't feel Gribbin was inspired to do so in this book. Unlike Point Houghton, the Thorofare is a busy place despite its remoteness.
