Robert Amiss is persuaded by his friend Detective Sergeant Pooley of the CID to take a job as a waiter in ffeatherstonehaughs (pronounced Fanshaws), a gentlemens club in St James. The club secretary has allegedly jumped to his death from the gallery of this imposing building. Against most of the evidence, Pooley believes he was murdered.Amiss finds himself in a bizarre caricature of a club, run by and for debauched geriatrics, with skeletons rattling in every cupboard. Why are there so few members? How are they financed? Will Amiss keep his job despite the enmity of the ferocious, snuff-covered Colonel Fagg?
Editorial : From Publishers Weekly This low-key whodunit set in a London club shows members dropping out of the old-boy network in decidedly unusual ways. Ruled by the memory of lascivious poet, bon vivant and womanizer John Wilmot, Earl of Rochester, whose verse appears throughout the narrative, the ffeatherstonehaugh (pronounced "Fanshaw") club is appalled when its secretary, Trueman, falls from an upper story to his death in the saloon. It's also a fun read-aloud book, which is great when you're the parent who gets to read it over and over and over :). Choral speaking works particularly well with beginners since they are most reluctant to give voice to their new language. Full of surprises - all bad. There was a future timeline portrayed in this book that was interesting as well.
Not worth your time. I have read 9 chapters of the total 14 in this book until now, and I have to say that I really dislike it.
First of all, this book is terrible written, the author introduces concepts with no previous references at all or the mathematical development is not shown, it only mentions the name of the concept and final expression. Really enjoyed, y ou see the man as a human being after reading this.. Excellent resource for the practitioner and student alike, I work doing financial modeling so this book has a lot of hands on techniques that I can apply at work, recommend!.
