What is remarkable is that the reader is left in those darkest places -- academic cheating, attempted suicide, marital infidelity, murder -- for only as long as it takes the author to strike another match with his unparalleled wit. For all intents and purposes, Jared Stone, a man in his thirties, is washed up as far as hockey goes. Towards the end Michael and Kate became a little more tolerable but never did they make me want to cheer them on to happiness.

When I read a book I tend to judge it based on whether the characters and plot still occupy my mind once I have finished the book. Just when you think you've got someone figured out Wham! another piece of the puzzle emerges, and everything you thought you knew shifts, realigns and refocuses. Like any parenting book, no one will agree with it 100%, but I've found when paired with my own instincts and common sense, it can be a very useful tool..
